Introduction / History

The Karas are a small ethnic group found only in Indonesia. They are part of the Pacific Islanders affinity bloc and belong to the New Guinea people cluster. Historically, the Karas have lived in coastal and island communities, maintaining close ties to the sea for sustenance and trade. Their language is Karas, though Indonesian is also widely used. Their identity has been shaped by isolation, traditional village life, and gradual exposure to outside influences, including Christianity brought by missionaries in recent generations.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life among the Karas centers on subsistence and community. Their primary occupations consist of fishing and small-scale farming. Men often fish or cultivate crops, while women manage household duties and contribute to food preparation and weaving. Their families are close-knit, with extended relatives living nearby. Elders hold respected positions, guiding traditions and mediating disputes. Community gatherings often revolve around harvests, weddings, and religious holidays. Music, dance, and storytelling are important cultural expressions.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Karas primarily practice Protestant Christianity, a faith tradition that emerged from the Protestant Reformation. While Christianity has taken root, traditional animistic practices and cultural rituals may still influence daily life. Evangelical presence is small, and many have limited access to discipleship or biblical teaching.

What Are Their Needs?

On the spiritual level the Karas need deeper engagement with Scripture and strong local church leadership to grow in faith. There is a need for faithful gospel witness, discipleship, and leadership training. Many have heard of Christ but lack mature understanding of his message. Stronger churches and translated Scripture in their heart language would help them grow spiritually.

They physical needs include access to healthcare, clean water, and education. Isolation makes resources scarce, and economic opportunities are limited.

Prayer Items

Pray for the Karas to have access to clean water, healthcare, and education that will improve their daily lives.
Pray for the translation and distribution of Scripture in the Karas language so they can understand God's word clearly.
Pray for local believers to be strengthened in their faith and equipped to lead their communities in Christ.
